gary windo

I had the great fortune of knowing Gary and spending some memorable times in his company. I don't really suppose there is a way to put into words what hanging out with him was like. He was funny, eccentric, silly, intelligent. . .a great conversationalist, never mind the fact that, man, he could blow that horn!!! I remember one time in Providence, Rhode Island, he convinced both me and another touring pal of mine, Donna, to go eat Sushi with him, although neither of us had ever tried it. He was like "C'mon, girls, you've got to try it, you'll absolutely love it . . .Sushi is great. . .", coaxing us with his British accent how could we possibly say no? I'll never forget watching him eat that Tuna Sashimi, thinking "This is really gross!" and somehow forcing myself to give it a try. And today, it's one of my favorite meals.

Everything with Gary was always full on. He was so passionate about it all. I remember when he had joined the Psychedelic Furs in the mid-eighties and their tour was coming through town. I stopped by the club during the sound check and he said "C'mon down tonight, I'll put you on the list." Just one problem, another band was coming through town that night and I was hoping Gary could sit in with them. Sad to say, I never got to see him perform with the Furs because I couldn't tear myself away from the 'Q' at Toad's Place. I did, however, get the chance to see Gary perform with his then wife, Pam, when her band, Pam Windo and the Shades played in New Haven at the Agora, opening up for Todd Rundgren.

I have quite a few fond memories of Gary Windo, not only as an outstanding musician in his field, but as a human being full of life's spirit, who engraciated my life with his presence. He wasn't a closefriend, just someone I was lucky enough to know for a while.
