What Are You Doing Here?

It's a funny thing with the 'Q'. It seems like you run into one of the guys on the street if you're out and about in the city where they're playing. Even showing up unexpectedly at an out of the way gig always seems to bring a smile to the boys' faces. I had that kind of experience with Donn on several occasions.

I was visiting my pal Stefan in Chicago while he was a student at Northwestern. It was winter time. Really cold, y'know? They don't call it the windy city for nothin'. Someone got the idea of heading down to Bloomington, Indiana to catch the boys at a club there. You didn't have to ask me twice!

I only remember a couple of things about that night. One was me and Stefan crunched in the back of a small car. I'm tempted to say Volkswagen Beetle but I'm not too sure. The other thing I remember was the look on Donn's face when he saw me at the front of the stage. This was really the first time I traveled beyond the east coast for a gig. Donn just looked at me, his eyes bugged out for a second and then he started to laugh. After the show he told me that he figured it was only a matter of time. Guess he knew I was hooked.

Many years later, I took my son on a mini vacation to Howe Caverns and the Catskill Game Farm in Upstate NY. We stopped at the Grand Union in Saugerties to get some munchies on the way to our motel. As we were returning to our car, I see this guy and a little girl coming towards us. It was Donn and his daughter. Really funny!

I've heard other folks talk about the same kind of thing while they're poking around in a city the boys are playing in. Running into Tom or Terry at a record shop or on a walk. Reminds me of that old saying 'Wherever you go, there you are." My take on it is "Wherever you go, there 'Q' are!"
